We recently hosted an enriching Equity and Diversity Session, in collaboration with the ‘Women in Data Science Worldwide’ (WiDS) initiative*, entitled “Equity and Diversity in the Era of AI and Small Data”. This event brought together members of SmallData and the public to explore vital topics concerning equity and diversity within our CRC.
The session kicked off with an inspiring welcome address by our early career researcher and advocate for equal opportunities, Meropi Karakioulaki. Following this, esteemed speakers Regina Herzog from University of Freiburg, Wanda Gerding from University of Bochum, and Felix Wittenzellner from GDAPE shared their insights on advancing equity within our associated institutions.
The highlight of the event was the breakout sessions, where lively and thought-provoking discussions unfolded on challenging issues, including the professional hurdles faced by mothers in research. These conversations enabled everyone to gain a deeper understanding of the equity challenges prevalent in academia.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all speakers and participants for their engaging discussions and contributions to these important conversations.
* WiDS @ University of Freiburg is independently organized by CRC 1597 ‘Small Data’ to be part of the mission to increase participation of women in data science and to feature outstanding women doing outstanding work.
